Attached, 09/20/2007 Meeting Minutes, please find the minutes from yesterday afternoon’s AMSA meeting. Some important changes have been made, so please read through the minutes carefully. I would like to touch upon a couple of changes right now.
1. Please welcome Capri Copp as our newly elected USG Liaison. Thank you, Capri, for accepting this important role with our chapter!
2. We are still in need of a Treasurer. If you’re interested, or know someone who may be, please send a nomination our way.
3. In order to boost our chapter membership, we voted to eliminate local chapter dues. This is a savings of $30 per year! In order to access or member benefits or hold an officer position, you must still be a member-in-good-standing with AMSA National. The dues to join national are very reasonable, especially when you consider what most professional associations charge their members. You can apply to AMSA National at https://www.amsa.org/secure/member1.cfm?Category=Premedical. Current dues are as follows: one year, $35 - two years, $55 - three years, $65 - four years, $75.
4. Don’t forget that, as a member of our AMSA chapter, that you have access to a $150 discount on Kaplan MCAT preparation courses. For those of you who plan to take the exam this spring, now is the time to prepare. The next Kaplan course begins in October. If you sign up for the course in September, you receive an additional discount.
5. The first fall medical humanities seminar is coming up this Tuesday, September 25, at noon. The lecturer is Edgar Huang, and his presentation is entitled, “Touching Life: Telling Organ Donation Stories”. The presentation will be held in the Lilly Auditorium, lower level of University Library.
6. Don’t forget to get registered now for the AMSA region 4 and 6 conference. The early registration deadline is October 1. After that time, registration goes up to $50. If you’re planning to attend, please send a message stating such to info@amsa-iupui.org. Several of us are traveling to Chicago together and sharing a hotel room(s) in order to save much needed cash. The event is October 19-21 at University of Illinois at Chicago School of Medicine. It is entitled, “Doctors Leading Reform: Advocacy and Activism in Medicine”.
Our next meeting will be in the University Library building, room UL 1116, on October 3 at 11:00 AM. We hope to see you all there.

The following event is co-sponsored by Biology Club, Premed Club, AMSA Premedical Chapter, and Biomedical Engineering Club. It is a must see event for all premedical students. We hope to see you all in the IUPUI Business/SPEA building, room BS2000, this coming Wednesday at 3:30. See you there!
This Wednesday at 3:30 in BS2000 (business building) Mr. Stump from the IU school of medicine will be giving a talk about information/advice for applying to medical school. This is a great opportunity to hear what it takes to get into the IU school of medicine from the person who oversees the process. I highly recommend all pre-medical students try attend as well as anyone else who will be applying to professional school or graduate school. His information will be very relevant to any field about the basics of what is expected. He will likely address GPA, entrance exam scores, shadowing, volunteering, and research expectations. As you can see this will be good information for anyone applying to dental, pharm, osteopathic, podiatry, optometry or any other graduate program. Light refreshments will be served before/during the talk. The room is reserved from 3 to 5 so show up early and if you have to be late or leave early that will be fine.

The AMSA premedical chapter call-out meeting was held this afternoon. To those of you who could not attend, we hope that this posting of the meeting minutes will catch you up on what is going on within the chapter, and that you can make it to future meetings. If, after reviewing the attached minutes (09/05/2007 Meeting Minutes09/05/2007 Meeting Minutes), you have questions or concerns, please feel free to post them to this forum or send an email to info@amsa-iupui.org and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
During this afternoon’s meeting, the listserv sign-up raffle prizes were drawn. Unfortunately, neither of the winners were present to collect their prizes. I’ll hold onto the prizes and you can collect them at our next meeting on September 20, in library room UL 1116, at 4:30p. The winners are:
First prize: SHARLA WILLHITE, ONE $5 Hollywood Video gift card and a 10% coupon for Popeye’s Chicken
Second prize: RENATA WHITFIELD, Candy from Sweet Factory
Also, we have two open officer positions to fill. Please send nominations to info@amsa-iupui.org. You CAN nominate yourself too. The two open positions are:
TREASURER: Work closely with the executive board and membership to collect dues and fundraiser money, work on a budget for club events, request funding from AMSA National and/or USG, perform accounting duties, work with our financial institution (locally), and other duties as required.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE: Represent our chapter at the bimonthly USG Council of Organizations meetings on campus and report back to the executive board and/or membership what comes of those meetings.
Holding a position of leadership within any club or organization is a great addition to your medical school application. So, please consider nominating yourself or a friend for one of these positions. We will hold the election at our next meeting on September 20. Because our normal election is held during the last meeting of the fall semester, and officers are elected for one-year terms, the officers chosen during this special election will remain on for slightly more than one year. Their terms will end at the end of the fall 2008 semester.
Okay folks, catch up with the attached meeting minutes and we’ll see you all on the 20th for our meeting during the afternoon, and our premedical seminars in the evening. Take care!
Sincerely,
Tammie L. Nelson
President, IUPUI Premedical Chapter

Okay, that’s it for our confirmed events. We also have some special events in the works for members only including special medical campus tours and a possible visit to the morgue. Be watching for those announcements to be made in the near future.
We also plan to support the School of Liberal Art’s medical humanities and bioethics program by attending and encouraging others to attend their regularly scheduled seminars. We will post a schedule of those seminars shortly. A sneak peak of those to come include, “The Legacy of Ryan White”, “Truth-Telling in Oncology”, “Touching Life: Telling Organ Donation Stories”, and many more informative lectures. Please support this seminar series so that the SLA will continue to bring them to campus each semester.
One last note for now: We encourage our chapter members to shadow physicians in order to see what life after medical school is really about (it’s not all E.R., Scrubs, and Chicago Hope). As a benefit to our members, we make available the documentation required by University Hospital by students wishing to shadow. We also have contacts within the UH system with which we can place you with a physician for a day…and we handle the legwork for you! All you have to do is give us a little information about yourself and what type of physician you would like to shadow. Regrettably, this service does take a lot of time; therefore, we do reserve it for AMSA members only.
We look forward to seeing you all at the involvement expo Tuesday. In the mean time, have a wonderful weekend!

Earlier this year, our AMSA premedical chapter teamed up with AMWA and SNMA chapters on the IUPUI campus to help produce The Vagina Monologues. The beneficiary of the event was the locally operated Legacy House, a service center for victims of domestic violence. We are proud to announce that we helped raise $1,287.00 for Legacy House. Thank you to everyone who lent a hand and/or attended the production!

Saturday, our AMSA chapter embarked on a daytrip to Chicago. Nine of us departed campus just prior to 8:30. We took two cars, mine and Holly’s. We stopped for lunch at Baker’s Square in Merrillville, then drove on to the near-northside, ‘Old Chicago’, neighborhood in which the International Museum of Surgical Science is located. The museum is housed in a 1910 mansion on North Lake Shore Drive. It is beautiful, and has marvelous views of the lake, as well as four floors loaded with surgical/medical devices and information from around the world. We explored the museum on our own for a while, then went on a guided tour. Afterwards, we embarked on a search for that kind of pizza pie one can only find in Chicago. After asking a couple of locals for guidance, we ended up at Giordano’s at the intersection of Chicago and Rush. What an excellent pizza pie! We then hurried back to the cars as the city begins towing at 6:00 pm in our location. We made it with five minutes to spare! We then headed home for a good night’s sleep.
Thanks to everyone who went on the trip with us. We had a fabulous time and hope to sponsor further educational trips in the near future!

Hello all of you premedical students at IUPUI! Since you’re enjoying a beautiful summer off, why not spend some of your free time with other AMSA members and join us for a trip to Chicago? If you’re taking summer classes, and we know that you are, that’s okay too. We’re making this a Saturday only trip. We’ll meet on-campus early on the morning of Saturday, July 14, and head north. We’ll be visiting the International Museum of Surgical Science and digging up some dinner in the Windy City prior to heading back home that evening. The only cost to you is museum admittance ($4 with student ID), your lunch/dinner, and maybe chipping in a little for fuel if you choose to carpool with someone.
You do not need to be a member of AMSA at IUPUI to attend this event; however, we MUST know at least one week prior to our trip if you plan to attend. So, please send an RSVP to info@amsa-iupui.org today if you’ll attend with us. Meeting time and location (on campus) will be sent to all attendees a few days prior to our trip.
